When To Publish Your Medium Story

It might make a difference!

In my neverending quest to understand social media, I read constantly in that pursuit. And one piece of advice I’ve seen over and over again concerning conquering Twitter, is to publish your tweets at a time of day when your followers are actually on the platform.

Of course, Twitter, unlike most other social media, has that fleeting ephemeral quality which dictates your tweet lasts for only a limited period of time. Medium is not that way. So that piece of advice shouldn’t really apply.

However, something I learned from selling internet advertising in my past is that Monday is the big traffic day on the web. Every website I sold ads for reported that fact at one time or another.

So naturally, that reality probably applies on Medium as well. I’d be willing to bet that if you asked the boss, he’d tell you that Monday is a big traffic day for our (or actually his) platform.

But yesterday, I discovered something else I did not anticipate. Checking my story stats against Sunday’s, I consistently found that while the number of views was generally up, the reading time was down!

At first, I thought it might be a quirk in Medium’s stat reporting. It’s amazing how thorough and up-to-the-minute we get our numbers. Things must…
