What’s Old Is New Again

Repurposing your old dormant stories

The following is a scenario from which virtually all of us suffer. We published a story — it had its run — and it is now completely dormant. Since the date you hit publish, you have garnered many more followers who if they knew that the old article existed, would want to read it. Given that Medium doesn’t allow us to republish the same story again, what’s the workaround?

There are options:

Edit and improve your old story

Medium is ok with writers changing old stories and then republishing. Exactly how much of a change we have to make is kind of a gray area. But it seems to me that changing the title, subtitle, image and making a few nips and tucks in the text should meet with the Wizard’s approval.

That can be accomplished with a moderate amount of effort. You then hit publish and you have a new story for your new followers. It’s really pretty easy.

2. Move the story to your own publication

This method requires that you have a publication in the first place which fits the niche of your story. All you need to do is remove the story from the publication it’s currently in (check the three dots).
