To say I have a checkered past with the Internal Revenue Service would be an understatement. When they come to your door, seize most of your money, and then after 5+ years of harassment, throw you in the slam for a year, you pretty much know they took notice of your delinquency.

Regardless, I have no qualms about making them aware of their very own errors and omissions — and my stupid ex-accountant’s. So last September, I sent them two separate registered letters. In the first, I complained about what I felt (and feel) was an unwarranted interest payment they demanded of me. And in the second, I filed an amended return because my accountant forgot to deduct my Medicare premium from my business income.

After a few fruitless phone calls, an agent gave me the 411. The IRS is short-staffed and overwhelmed after all the complications the pandemic caused. And on a personal note, I don't find them to be all that competent. Not a good sign all around.

In response to my applications for refunds, the IRS has sent me numerous letters — all to the effect that they’re gridlocked and need more time to consider my situations. Which of my letters those communications were responding to is difficult if not impossible to decipher. In fact, I received one of the many just two days ago telling me…
