The State of Medium Fall 2024

An anecdotal take

For those members who read this platform’s blog, I’m sure you’re aware that the boss publishes a monthly appraisal of where the site has been — is now— and where it will be going in the future. As you’d imagine, he knows more than we do. But that doesn’t mean I don’t have my own uneducated and myopic view on the subject.

I am a consistent writer here. I generally publish seven to ten stories per week. They tend to be on a few different subjects but stay consistent within my realm. Logically, you’d think that my earnings would be similarly consistent. They are not. This month’s look to be just 40% of July’s when what I consider one of my most meaningless stories scored thousands of views.

I realize that nobody can really predict which of their works go viral and which are stillbirths. For me, I don’t see a lot of rhyme or reason therein. I simply write about what moves me and let the pieces fall where they may.

Still, there are indications. Earlier in the year, I had a few stories Boosted. Medium’s Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval is not just a boost for a writer’s ego — but his or her earnings as well. And I think there might be a problem with the latter.

Boosting too many stories and thus upping the pay on those submissions is great for the Boosted authors —…
