The Jessica Wildfire Craze
I don’t get it
I have a confession to make: I almost never read the front page of Medium. It’s probably part of the reason I’m such a failure here. I recognize that.
Anyway — I somehow ended up where I rarely go (can’t remember how) and saw a story by Jessica Wildfire, who I faintly recalled is a big success on this platform. And when I saw 101k followers and a headline about how Putin has already won his military operation, as with a car accident, I couldn’t resist but look.
Let me say this before I become the negative Nelly I surely am: Jessica is an excellent writer. There’s no doubt about that. But from what I read (the Putin story and two or three others were enough for me to get the idea), Wildfire has two main agendas. The first is to gender-whine — and the second to express her opinion.
People whining about discrimination directed at their race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation et all is getting old for me. If you’re Ukrainian and a Russian bomb just killed your child? That’s different. Whine away. But an amateur (albeit good) writer who’s earning real money because she has pleased the Medium gods? Count your blessings, sister. No sale. Not interested.
Moving on — op-eds can be fun to write. I’ve done a fair number myself — and had a few dozen published in major league…
