Front and center in the past two days’ news is a story that initially held no interest for me. Yet another shooting spree/mass murder scoop. Yawn! I know. Not a yawn for the dead people or their families. More like a tragedy.

But when I hear this stuff, I can only think “welcome to America and all our second amendment right nuts. Other countries don’t have this problem. What’s wrong with us. And why is this shit news in the first place? Who wants to hear about murder and mayhem just before dinner?”

The slant that gave this sordid story its appeal had to do with anti-Asian discrimination born of the pandemic. I guess the media felt that would sell the segment.

A friend of mine called to ask if I’d written anything about this event — to which I responded in the negative. citing my disinterest in stories like this. But then I watched the news and came to realize that in its mission to garner viewers, the networks had missed the real lead:

TRICK SHOOTS MULTIPLE MASSAGE GIRLS DEAD

Let’s see. Asian massage parlors with tinted and/or shuttered windows — all of which have multiple reviews on “Rub Maps,” a website known for its “rub and tug” reviews.

I got news: Two plus two does equal four in this case. This isn’t about racial discrimination. It’s about a whack job killing massage girls — as if it’s their fault he has a self-confessed sex addiction.

The media! Yucch! Why distort the story and misinform the public? Oh, yeah! Money. Put a spin on bad news so it generates more interest — and more ad revenue. What was I thinking?
