Personally, I played with too many oldies bands in which the musicians were not up to the task — nor were many of the counterfeit replacements. But nobody from the audience ever complained that I’m aware of. It doesn’t sound like you backed “oldies” in the traditional sense of the word (50’s and 60’s artists). Maybe that’s why you fared better. Or maybe you’re a better musician.
