My Daily Writing Routine

Who says you can’t write three stories every day?

Upon discovering my Medium homepage, my cousin June was amazed at how much content I’ve published in the past five months.

“I can’t possibly read all this. How do you do all that writing? Where do you get all those ideas?” she asked.

So I told her. And while recounting my process, it occurred to me that I should share what I’d just related right here for those of us who sit down to write — and then go blank at the operative moment.

First of all, I don’t have a job. That’s really helpful. I can concentrate on writing all day if I’ve a mind to. Anytime an idea jumps into my head, I can run to my computer and tap it in before I forget. But my method isn’t as haphazard as that.

I’m up at about 6:30 or 7 AM, and it’s straight to the coffee machine to brew up a big mugful. Then I sit down to check the overnight activity for trends. Which is to say what piece and on what subject there might have been some activity.

It’s almost like rising in the morning to check last night’s scores in your favorite professional sports league. What did well? Taxi stories? Escort stuff? Prison exposes? You get the idea.
