Feedback on the New “Feature This Story” Strategy

It might actually work

For those of us who have opted for publishing at least some of what we write in our own medium publications, the company is offering a new promotional tool. I call it the “feature this story” strategy.

You can’t use it too often. (After all, if you could, that would defeat the purpose.) The idea is to choose a greatest hit, feature it, and Medium will automatically up it in the algorithm so more people see it.

While not fully convinced it would make a difference, I gave it a shot. It only took a few minutes of my time so why not, right?

One of the stories I decided to feature (I have a few publications) is actually the very first I published here. I thought it was a worthy piece of writing but for whatever reason, it did not explode. Such is life.

After featuring the story, I’ve noticed that the number of reads has increased. Not drastically, mind you — but somewhat. And then the story received a telling comment:
